From April 15-26, three leaders in the Reformed Church in America (RCA) traveled in Johannesburg and Cape Town, South Africa, as part of a delegation with Churches for Middle East Peace (CMEP), meeting with leaders from the Uniting Reformed Church in Southern Africa (URCSA), the Dutch Reformed Church (DRC), and the South African Council of Churches (SACC). Rev. Eddy Alemán, general secretary, Rev. Dr. Laura Osborne, RCA coordinator for ecumenical relations, and Rev. Dr. Nathan Busker, Commission on Christian Unity member and pastor of Ponds Reformed Church in Oakland, New Jersey, experienced a “wonderful time of connection and fellowship,” listening to ecumenical partners whose confession—the Belhar Confession—the RCA shares. “We took part in conversations about many topics, but especially unity, reconciliation, and futures freed from racism—all topics that are incredibly important,” says Osborne.

In a joint statement released on April 27 to commemorate the country’s transition from apartheid and white minority rule to a democratic society, Christian groups, including the Reformed Church in America (RCA) and Churches for Middle East Peace (CMEP), called for cross-continental solidarity to foster peace.

“How is God calling us to respond to this moment in the world?” This is the core question of an American delegation visiting the country from April 19 to April 27. “ We strive to follow the Prince of Peace and currently there is no peace,” Reverend Dr Mae Elise Cannon told leaders of the Dutch Reformed Church, the VG Church and representatives of the South African Council of Churches in Johannesburg on Sunday, April 19.

They had made a last-ditch overture for peace just three weeks earlier. An interfaith group Martin cofounded, called the Luke 10 Foundation, issued an antiwar statement in early February. Fourteen Americans, including the director of Churches for Middle East Peace, three Muslim imams, and three Jewish rabbis, joined seven Iranian leaders, including an ayatollah, to “implore” their governments to seek reconciliation.

In a perhaps unsurprising development, Trump’s newest enemy is the Pope. The president went off on a tirade criticizing the leader of the Catholic Church, who has been increasingly critical of Trump in recent weeks. On Palm Sunday, the American-born pontiff censured the violence in the Middle East, as well as any rationalization of this violence, in the name of Christianity. Pope Leo XIV’s later upbraiding of President Trump for the attacks on Iran is one of the first times he has addressed Trump by name.

Silence in the face of injustice is complicity. Peace demands courage. Faith demands action. Priests Against Genocide USA (PAGUSA) has welcomed and affirmed the recent moral appeal issued by Pope Leo, who, in remarks to reporters at the Vatican, called on “all people of goodwill to search always for peace and not violence, to reject war,” and urged citizens worldwide to contact their political leaders and congressmen and demand an end to escalating and unjust conflict. In direct response to this call, Priests Against Genocide USA is urging immediate public action to prevent further US complicity in violence in the Middle East.

In recent weeks, there has been an unfolding public conversation on the political right about Christian Zionism and Israel’s genocidal war on Gaza. This debate has extended to Catholics—with some claiming, and others rejecting, the compatibility of Catholicism and Zionism. As co-authors of a forthcoming book on Palestine, Israel, and Catholic Social Teaching, we feel the debate has brought to the surface important questions with which Catholics must grapple. At the same time, it has caused significant confusion around Church teachings on the relationship with the Jewish people and the modern state of Israel. How might Catholics think about these issues?

“Pilgrimages to this land simply don’t exist in a vacuum detached from the everyday realities of people on the ground,” said Magnett. “Acknowledging that should be part of the responsibility undertaken by anyone working at the intersections of faith and Israel/Palestine.”

WASHINGTON — Thousands of Christians across more than 20 countries will light red candles on Christmas Eve – a new symbol of solidarity with Palestinian Christians, culminating a grassroots movement that launched three weeks ago from Bethlehem. Red Candle: Light for Palestine began November 29 with a ceremony in the Grotto of the Nativity, where two Palestinian children lit the first candle alongside clergy from Catholic, Orthodox, and Protestant traditions. October 7, 2025, marked two years since the Hamas attacks on southern Israel that killed roughly 1,200 people and took more than 150 hostages into Gaza. That day changed history — but it was not where the story began. Israelis and Palestinians have been in conflict for much of the 20th century. The late 19th-century influx of tens of thousands of Jewish immigrants to historic Palestine came as many fled antisemitism and rejection around the world. The Jewish Zionist movement sought to establish a homeland in what religious Jews believed to be historic Israel — a land tied to their ancient faith and identity.

ast week, the Arab American Institute, Churches for Middle East Peace, and the American Friends Service Committee brought a group of Palestinian Americans with family in Gaza to meet with members of Congress and media. Their two-day presence in Washington was designed to give voice to Palestinian victims of Israel’s assault on Gaza and to put a human face on those who have suffered. Our government officials have frequently met with and heard the stories of Israeli families. Palestinians haven’t had the same opportunity.

At a dinner held in conjunction with the gathering, the 21Wilberforce human rights organization presented its annual Frank Wolf International Freedom Award to Churches for Middle East Peace. The Trump-led plan marks the third cessation in fighting between Israel and Hamas since October 2023, after Hamas’s terrorist attacks on Israel, which killed 1,200 people, and Israel’s following offensive on Gaza which has killed more than 67,000. Israel’s military violence and blockading of aid and food have led to a humanitarian crisis that the UN and other groups have called a genocide.

Five-year-old Hind Rajab was killed by Israeli soldiers as she sat in the back of her family’s car in Gaza. Her relatives were trying to evacuate. The world listened in horror to the recordings of Hind’s final pleas for help as she watched each of her family members die before soldiers took her life, too. 21Wilberforce President Wissam al-Saliby has announced that the 2025 honoree of the Frank Wolf International Religious Freedom Award is Churches for Middle East Peace (CMEP). The award will be presented at a recognition dinner during the Global Religious Freedom Conference at Dallas Baptist University on October 20, 2025. Founded in 1984, CMEP is a coalition of more than 30 Catholic, Orthodox, Protestant, and Evangelical denominations and organizations. Through education, advocacy, and direct engagement with policymakers, CMEP mobilizes U.S. Christians to promote equality, human rights, security, and justice for Israelis, Palestinians, and all people of the Middle East.

This fall, the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America (GOARCH) is joining Churches for Middle East Peace (CMEP) as a sponsor of the “Let Children Live” campaign. This global, faith-rooted campaign calls on Christian communities to lift up the names and lives of Palestinian children through prayer, worship, and public advocacy.

More than 100 international organizations, including Oxfam (Oxford Committee for Famine Relief) and MSF (Médecins Sans Frontières, or Doctors Without Borders), have signed a joint letter calling on Israel to halt what they describe as the “weaponization of aid” into Gaza, as starvation deepens. Unless INGOs submit to the full registration requirements, including the mandatory submission of details of private donors, complete Palestinian staff lists and other sensitive information about personnel for so-called “security” vetting to Israeli authorities, many could be forced to halt operations in Gaza and the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, and remove all international staff within 60 days. On 23 July, Al-Haq published the position paper “Third State and International Organisations Complicity in Genocide through the Failure to Protect Palestinians and Failure to Enforce International Law”. Last week, I logged onto social media and quickly came across a story about a Palestinian pediatrician in Gaza. While Dr. Alaa al-Najjar was working at a hospital in the city of Khan Younis, she learned that her home, where she lived with her 10 children and husband, had been struck by an Israeli bomb in her absence. The bodies of seven of her children were brought to the hospital where she was working, some charred. The bodies of two others, including her 6-month-old, were trapped under the rubble. The only surviving member of her family is her 11-year-old son, Adam, who sustained severe injuries. Her husband, Hamdi, succumbed to his wounds days after the bombing. Read More

Last year, I was part of a group of American Catholics who organized a letter advocating for more just U.S. policies on Israel-Palestine and a Gaza ceasefire. It was signed by over six thousand Catholics. But many more, in the wake of the brutal October 7 attack by Hamas and the ensuing indiscriminate Israeli military assault on Gaza, have refrained from engaging. This has left a void in the American Catholic response. Until the election of the first American pope, Leo XIV, who has already called for a Gaza ceasefire, Vice President J. D. This Anglican institution, recognized as Gaza’s only Christian hospital and sole cancer treatment center, sustained significant damage, including the destruction of its genetic laboratory, emergency department, and pharmacy. The attack resulted in the deaths of three patients, among them a 12-year-old child

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) issued a statement condemning an Israeli airstrike on Al-Ahli Arab Hospital in Gaza, which occurred on Palm Sunday. CAIR described the attack as a violation of international law and called for accountability. The organization urged the U.S. government to condemn the strike and to take action to prevent further attacks on medical facilities. CAIR also emphasized the need for an immediate ceasefire and for humanitarian aid to be allowed into Gaza

CMEP has condemned the killing of 14-year-old American Palestinian Amir Rabee by Israeli forces in the occupied West Bank on April 6, 2025. In a statement, CMEP described the incident as an “unspeakable tragedy” and a stark reminder of the human cost of ongoing violence and occupation. CMEP emphasized that such actions should not be normalized and called for moral outrage rather than silence.​ CMEP highlighted that Amir is the first American killed by Israeli forces in 2025, noting that five American citizens were killed in the West Bank and Gaza in 2024 without any resulting accountability or meaningful investigation. They criticized the U.S. government’s silence and inaction, urging President Trump to have addressed the issue during his meeting with Prime Minister Netanyahu on April 7, 2025. CMEP also condemned the renewed promotion of plans for the ethnic cleansing of Palestinians from Gaza and the forcible displacement of over forty thousand Palestinians in the West Bank, labeling such actions as grave violations of international law.​ Aditionally, CMEP called on the United States to pursue diplomatic engagement with Iran instead of resorting to military action, warning that escalation would lead to further chaos and loss of life. They concluded by offering prayers for Amir’s grieving family and reaffirming their commitment to peace, dignity, and security for all in the Holy Land.​

Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi calls for an end to the ongoing Israeli agression. He made the statement at several meetings where he emphasized the need to open crossings that are dedicated for aid and the continued encroachment on Christian and Islamic holy sites in Jerusalem.

Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Ayman Safadi welcomed CMEP to discuss the ongoing developments in the region. He stressed Jordan’s efforts to bring peace to the region and the current escalations in the region that are challenging their efforts. Safadi also received peace process experts of European Union missions to the United Nations in New York where they met to discuss strengthening Jordanian-European partnerships, and efforts towards an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and the immediate delivery of humanitarian aid throughout the Strip.

In response to U.S. pressure, including threats to cut aid, Egypt has postponed a planned visit to the White House and is coordinating with other Arab nations to formulate a unified stance. A summit in Riyadh is scheduled to address these developments and discuss a collective response to the plan.

Vance also criticized the placement of U.S. taxpayer funds to non-governmental organizations promoting atheism abroad. He questioned how the nation reached a point where it supports such initiatives. His remarks came amid a time where there are ongoing debates over the administration’s policies affecting religious groups and funding.
