Policy Positions & Guidelines

Churches for Middle East Peace (CMEP) is organized to educate and give witness to principles of peace and justice in the Middle East on behalf of its religious constituencies by advocating public policy positions that seek to:

1. Pursue a durable, just, and lasting peace between Israelis and Palestinians based on international law and conventions, and grounded in human, political, and economic rights.
2. Oppose and pursue an end to occupation, consistent with the principles of self-determination for Indigenous peoples and upholding international legal principles of the illegality of acquisition of land by force.
3. Stand against the ethnic cleansing and displacement of the Palestinian people by ensuring accountability including opposing expansionist settlement policies that disregard legal restraints and international consensus. Recognize settlements as illegal and an impediment to peace.
4. Oppose and work to prevent all violations of international law, including genocide, ethnic cleansing, war crimes, unilateral annexations, and apartheid, committed by any party, group, or nation directly or indirectly. Respect for human rights of all in the region based on full observance of UN resolutions, the Geneva Conventions, and other international law and agreements.
5. Promote a shared Jerusalem by Palestinians and Israelis, as well as full access to the Holy Sites of the three religious communities — Jews, Christians, and Muslims – by those who call them holy.
6. Recognize the religious importance of the Middle East to Jews, Christians, Muslims, and others. Protect the religious freedom of all as well as support measures to ensure the viability of the historic Christian community in Palestine, Israel, and the entire region.
7. Promote restorative justice, resilience, and trauma healing, and multi-level peacebuilding efforts with a particular recognition of the contribution and role of women.
8. Defend free speech and religious liberty; reject theologies that justify oppression; and uphold the rights of churches and organizations to challenge unjust practices and policies that violate international laws and conventions. These strategies include exerting economic leverage on commercial and government actors through boycotts, divestment, and sanctions.
9. Support the right for engagement in nonviolent resistance while raising concerns about all forms of violence and addressing root causes of violence.
10. Encourage just and peaceful resolution based on international law of all conflicts in the Middle East region. This includes prioritizing demilitarization, including calling for the U.S. government to end military aid, arms transfers, and arms sales to the region, and instead promote development and humanitarian assistance that would foster peace and human needs.
11. Ensure the Palestinian right to lead reconstruction in Gaza and the West Bank where homes, communities, schools, mosques, churches, hospitals, medical clinics, and other parts of society have been destroyed or demolished, consistent with the Palestinian right to self-determination.
12. End the Israeli blockade of Gaza, and allow unrestricted access to humanitarian assistance to reduce inequality and promote human dignity, in both the West Bank and Gaza, while ensuring unfettered access to nutrition and medical care, and the protection of aid agencies and others.
13. CMEP opposes anti-Semitic, anti-Christian, and anti-Islamic actions and all other forms of racism or bigotry in rhetoric, actions, or laws that dehumanize, stereotype, or incite distrust or violence toward anyone.
