Third Sunday of Advent

Light the Candles

Some sit in the stillness seeking
On a landscape barren, choked with the weeds of weeping
Tears in the eyes, whispers pleading
When, oh Lord, when?
Who, oh Lord, who?

Some walk a path that suffers
Whipped by winds that thunder, bloated with the gnawing hunger
Hands raised to the sky, agony calls and shudders,
When, oh Lord, when?
Who, oh Lord, who?

Some stand in crowds of maddening size
Filled with false prophet lies that ignore gaunt eyes
And the few stand tall, anguish in their cries,
When, oh Lord, when?
Who, oh Lord, who?

Gentle is the Lord
His soothing booming voice
Rises above silence’s noise and says…

Steady is the Lord
His careful hand rides the breeze
Caresses tear stained cheeks and with tender ease he says…

Omniscient is the Lord
With a gaze that weaves around and through deceit
He lifts up the working and hurting, those burdened with defeat and says,

“I have plans for you
You the blind, the lame, the deaf
You the hungry, thirsty, the lonely, and bereft

I have plans for you
You the lawmakers, lawbreakers, policy changers
You writers, you speakers, educators, and peacemakers

You once waited on a babe in a manger
A long-expected savior
An answer for all of you, blessed and in favor

I tell you now,
Light your candles of hope
You are not alone, you are not on your own
It is safe to have faith, it’s safe to longingly await

My promises span longer than any measurable age
They’re true, they’re for you, they never fail, they’ll never change
Look to what’s coming, hear its drumming, the advent of redemption,
Hold fast, revival is assured, and for all of you, I’ll bring resurrection”

Dearest Lord,

Years ago a simple man in a simple cell asked if the Messiah had come. He waited and prayed and hoped like so many of us now wait for change, for the precious children of Palestine to be saved. We pray, and we will continue to pray, Lord. Hear the names of these precious young on our lips.
Give us the persistence and stamina of John the Baptist, and let us not give up hope. Help us remember the plans you have for each and every child, including 11-year-old Aline, and for each of us as we continue calling for justice and for peace.
