Ash Wednesday liturgy and ecumenical public witness

February 14 @ 11:00 am 1:00 pm

Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent, is an important moment in the Christian liturgical calendar, a time of prayerful repentance. This year, as we start the Lenten ceasefire campaign, we pray especially for peace in the Holy Land and for all who have been killed, injured or displaced since the escalation of hostilities in October, and we call on the Catholic president to heed the words of Pope Francis and other faith leaders calling for a ceasefire.

Please join us for one or both events on February 14 at Lafayette Park, outside the White House:

1) At 11 AM, a Catholic Mass, a solemn liturgy which will include sharing the Eucharist and distribution of ashes

2) Soon after 12 PM, a prayerful ecumenical public witness calling for a ceasefire and for a just peace in the Holy Land.

This event is part of a broader Christian “Wednesday Witnesses” for peace during this year’s Lenten period. These events, including prayer, ecumenical public witness, education, and other forms of coordinated action unite around the following calls:

  1. an immediate, sustained ceasefire
  2. demilitarization
  3. release of hostages and Palestinian prisoners held without due process
  4. robust humanitarian assistance, USG funding UNRWA, end the siege on Gaza
  5. an end to the occupation
  6. a political process for accountability and a just peace

My anguish, my anguish!
I writhe in pain!
Oh, the walls of my heart!
My heart is beating wildly;
I cannot keep silent;
for I hear the sound of the trumpet,
the alarm of war.
Disaster follows hard on disaster,
the whole land is laid waste.

– Jeremiah 4:19-20
